Cabbage Patch Kids were one of the biggest fads of the 1980's but I'm having trouble understanding the appeal. This video takes a look back at the fad and attempts to figure out why they became so popular.

I've got a bunch of those garbage pale kids cards lying around somewhere.

Urban legend says they give you a death certificate if you send the doll back to the store for a refund..

Around the same time, McDonald's depicted hamburgers as growing in patches in their happy meal ads.

The Cabbage Patch Kids fad was so crazy that a man from Kansas flew to London, England because he heard they were available there. He went, got one of the dolls, and came back in time to make it a Christmas present for his young daughter.

Do a story on the Rainbow Brite line of dolls and toys and dolls. Very popular in the mid-80's for a few years and then flopped hard. They've been brought back 4 times but it seems that Hallmark no longer has any interest in the line they started in 1984.

I have a huge collection that includes all five generations and a lot of stuff that was never sold in the USA.

I loved the garbage pail kids so much. The movie was awful, but I loved the cards. I had a cabbage patch kid doll too. I mean looking back they do look kinda weird and creepy, but I don't remember any of my other dolls from the time looking much better.

I just thought I would mention, in Japanese there is a modern concept (at least, I think) called "kimokawaii", which is a species of portmanteau of kimoi=gross and kawaii=cute. The idea is that there is such a thing as "cutely ugly" and that can be desirable. There may be a similar concept in English that I'm just unaware of (I'm from Brazil), but I think it is an interesting subject. It may not be the main draw in products like these, but a similar phenomenon may have played a part.

I had one and thought it was the cutest thing ever!

Cant wait for you to talk about Coleco where they signed a deal with Nintendo to licence there Donkey Kong game as a packin for the Colecovision. Also you got to do a two part episode on everything Atari.

I worked in retail during that fad and everyone asked for Cabbage Patch DOLLS. Parents wanted them for their children since they were all different. Each parent wanted to find one with the same hair and eye color as their own child or at least find one with the same name as their child. Parents would do anything to get one. It was a crazy thing to see.

I live in GA where there is a cabbage patch NURSERY and you can design a baby and watch it be BIRTHED OUT OF A CABBAGE TREE. I think the CPK is still popular here bc of it and the experience it brings

My mother was a Toys R Us manager when these things were released. Many fights erupted in the store over these dolls. The line was wrapped around the entire bldg outside when they were released! She brought one home for me.... the best thing about this doll was the baby powder smell the doll had.... you’d open the box & get the best smell! Just like a real baby. 😊

Oh my! What's this garbageness? It seems that Company Man's bare bayer aspirin hole has gotten the Cabbage Patch toys sucked into it like a mere vacuum cleaner! Such a thing! How comical! There's truly no will away for his precious snap now!

Suddenly, a loud noise came from Company Man's bootyasscheekcrackhole. "OH YEAH, YOU CAN'T ESCAPE NOW!" The toys said before they started slurping every one of Company Man's fluids inside as if they were spaghetti noodles!

Then, Company Man's clothing vanished away from his body into the void of nothingness! Slappy appeared out of nowhere and said "WHY HAVE YOU BECOME SO BOOTYNUDE?" before proceeding to put his 69 inch johnson in Company Man's ass while the toys were still slurping the delicious fluids from inside of it!

As a child of the 80s. I can say the appeal of playing with a CP doll was they could wear regular baby clothing. So. Your options for play were much wider.

I had two of these dolls and one of them still smells of strawberry I think? They were pretty great dolls for a 2 year old me.

I had a cabbage patch doll.

I still have my 2 Cabbage Patch Kids from when I was a kid.

I CANT GET OVER THE FACT YOU SAY "DALLS" INSTEAD OF DOLLS AHHHHHH

I was a kid then, and remember this fad well. I thought they were really cute. My parents wouldn't get me one because they were like $40 for a stupid doll, so my mom made me one. You could buy knock off heads and patterns for the body. It wasn't quite the same, but good enough!

I actually had one my mom passed down to me when I was little. Out of all of my baby dolls..that one was probably my least favorite. (But I was a pretend mom. I had to love all of my children equally, no matter how distorted they may be. Lol)

Nah fam Garbage Pail Kids are where it’s at!

Acting like the 1980's is ancient history makes you sound like a creepy teen. Or maybe just a dick.

Are you talking to me Ritchie?

I had two cabbage patch kids as a child (I was born in 82). One blonde, one red head. I loved the red head, not sure what happened to the blonde one. Mom got them for me because I was adopted and it was a great way for my parents to help me understand. It never occurred to me that the doll looked creepy.

My ex-wife collected some of these as an "investment.!"

As a child of the 80s I got a Cabbage Patch doll when I was 4 or 5. I always wanted one because of the commercials I would watch on TV, cartoon, and my friends had one. I begged my mom for a CP Doll until she took me to the store and bought me one. I loved that stupid doll..... For at least a couple of weeks. Then I lost it. I forgot where I'm going with all this. Ah well.
